Applications FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For the Piazzolla in the Senior semi-finals, I can only find a score for flute and guitar. Is this ok to use?

Yes, this piece was originally written for flute and guitar so please do use this version.

Where can I find the score for Piazzolla’s “Histoire du Tango”?

Should the score not be available in your local library it is readily available for purchase online, in the UK it is sold by Music Room and Boosey & Hawkes, in the USA it is for sale from Sheet Music Plus so we hope that you will find it easily.

The virtuoso piece that I want to play is significantly longer than 10 minutes, am I able to make cuts to reduce it to within the timeframe?

Yes absolutely, we are happy for cuts to be made in order for the piece to fit within the 10 minutes.

I am applying for the Senior section and would like to include my composed cadenza for the Mozart in my application audition video. Is this allowed?

Yes this is fine. We have stated that the cadenza is not required for the application audition video to allow candidates time to compose the cadenza. However, if you would like to include it feel free to do so.

For the repertoire to be performed with guitar / chamber musicians, do I need to bring additional musicians with me?

No, the chamber musicians to accompany you for the Dvořák (Junior section) and Piazzolla (Senior section) are provided by the Menuhin Competition.

I haven’t ever improvised before, do you have any tips about how I can start to work on this?

Check out this video  (click here) from Henning Kraggerud, one of the Menuhin Competition Geneva 2018 jurors, which gives an introduction to improvisation. You can view it online (click here).

Can I upload one video including the 3 or 4 pieces required for the application?

The videos need to be separate files with one piece per video. The recordings can be made all on one day or separately, as you wish, but they will need to be separate videos for each piece.

I think that I have submitted my application but I haven’t received a confirmation email from Embark. What can I do?

Please ensure that you have pressed the “Submit” button on Embark to submit. If you have not received an on-screen confirmation followed by an email your application may not have been safely received. If you have any technical queries regarding the application please visit support.embark.com and if required contact support@embark.com.

I have been completing the application on two computers simultaneously and some of the information I have entered has been lost. What can I do?

It should be fine to work on your application on two computers as long as you log in and out of Embark each time you use it. If the portal is open at the same time in two places then information might get lost. If you have any technical queries regarding the application please visit support.embark.com and if required contact support@embark.com.

For the original work composed within the last 30 years by a US composer or a composer from my own country, can I compose the work myself?

Yes, you are welcome to compose the work yourself but please remember that you will need to provide sheet music for the jury.

One of the repertoire pieces must be a work for solo violin written in the last 30 years by a US composer or a composer from my own country. I have a significant family connection to a country different from the country I reside in, can I choose a work from there instead?

You may choose a piece by a composer from the country you reside in, a country you hold citizenship of, or a country which you feel reflects your heritage. For example, if you are a citizen of both Germany and France, or a person of French descent living in Germany (regardless of your citizenship status), you could choose a piece by a French or German composer.

I have a video recording of me playing a piece of application repertoire with an orchestra. Can I submit this as one of my application audition videos?

Yes, you can submit this as one of your application videos, however please note that the recording must be of high quality and must have been made no more than 6 months before the date of your application. Your teacher must certify the video as being a recent recording in your recommendation letter. Please note that we cannot accept audio recordings only.

Can you recommend a piece composed or arranged by Kreisler?

Please note that we cannot recommend specific pieces composed or arranged by Kreisler, as these should be a candidate’s free choice. However, as long as the choice of works includes piano accompaniment and is less than 4 minutes in duration, your choice should be acceptable

I do not have a passport – can I apply using another form of ID?

For those who do not have passports, we can accept another internationally recognised form of photo ID which clearly displays your date of birth, such as a national ID card or valid drivers’ licence. However, please be aware that we can only accept alternative documents from those who do not have passports and please email us to inform us that you do not have a passport and therefore have uploaded an alternative identity document.
